Willpower doesn't work

Hi Reader, here’s the next instalment in this email series to help you to master your mind!

Do you ever berate yourself for not having "enough willpower" to overcome your struggles?

It seems logical that willpower and determination should help us to achieve our goals, like facing our fears, stopping comfort-eating, quitting smoking, or abstaining from any other unhelpful or unhealthy habit.

Using willpower alone actually requires a lot of mental effort and constant vigilance. It's like trying to paddle your canoo against the current. Not so bad in calm waters, but when you get to the rapids you tend to slide backward.

For example, the exposure and desensitsation treatment for trying to tackle phobias relies on willpower. You are expected to gradually face the fear (conscious mind) alongside learning relaxation techniques (conscious mind) to reduce the inevitable feelings of terror that arise from the subconscious mind. Now, if the conscious mind knew the solution to stop the fear it would have resolved the problem already! By ignoring the subconscious mind the root of the fear is never eliminated, just supressed through force of will. This takes constant effort.

Many people give up during the tests of nerve along the way because it is so hard to overcome their fears, and they feel like a failure. But it's the treatment method that is at fault - because it doesn't address the root of the problem. It is stressful, and that slow build up towards the big moment of facing the frightening situation head on can actually ramp up the tension - just like scary movies do.

I really feel for those who have put themselves through the torture of exposure and desensitsation treatment. They have a lot of courage. It doesn't need to be so hard. Really, there is a much easier path to make any changes that you desire - removing conscious effort by working with the subconscious mind and gaining its cooperation.

When clients come to me for Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) we work on the level of the subconscious mind. After all, that is where habits and patterns of behaviour, and the emotions and beliefs that drive them, are actually stored. It's where the buried memories of what caused your phobias, fears, insecurity, shame, and other hurtful emotions reside. RTT guides you to access the cause of your struggles from within the subconscious mind and to gently release the feelings and beliefs that have kept you stuck.

Working directly with the subconscious mind and the emotional brain centres of the limbic system, change can often be instantaneous. The amygdala, which stores perceived threats and sounds the alarm when we encounter them, has no perception of time - it is all happening now. That is why your terror of a spider, for example, is as real and powerful today as it was, as a child, when the phobia began. When my clients release the emotions and limiting beliefs at the root of their issue the amydala is cleared and reset and the symptom naturally resolves.

Unhelpful patterns of reacting and unhealthy coping mechanisms fall away because they are unnecesary once their drivers are released with RTT. So it becomes effortless to make those changes. RTT clients also benefit from a bespoke recording that reinforces the neuronal "pruning and tuning" (neuroplasticity) to hard-wire in these changes.

Having released their emotional baggage, my clients feel more calm, confident and in control. As they listen to their personal recording daily, the subconscious mind soaks up the positive input like a sponge creating transformations that they notice in their daily lives.

This is what Liz wrote about her experience with RTT:

"Immediately after the RTT session, I felt lighter. It was like I could come to terms with situations in my past, accept and release them and myself. I continued to listen to the bespoke transformational recording that Gaynor made for me and each day I felt stronger, but yet softer. I found myself feeling little bursts of joy in those small things in life and not being afraid to feel happy anymore. I found myself accepting, liking and loving myself more and more each day. Friends, my children and clients all remarked on the change in me - that I was happier and calmer. I can honestly say that that decision to have the RRT session has changed my life!!!!"

Knowledge is power! It makes such a difference to your life when you understand how your mind works!

Warmest wishes

Reader Here is another key aspect to help you to master your mind and use its power to help yourself and the world! Intentional attention is a powerful tool that we all have but many fail to use. When we focus our attention, what we are looking at magnifies or becomes more obvious. When you are shining a torch to see your way in the dark. You are spotlighting your path so that you can see it more clearly and make your way forward. Think of an avid gardener, like me. With focused attention,...

Hello Reader, Here's another instalment in my mindset series. No matter what kind of challenges we are facing, the mindset we assume to overcome them will greatly determine if we do overcome the challenge. Our mindset will influence how we approach the subject and how much we enjoy the time we have while we are overcoming the challenge. As Dr. Wayne Dyer used to say, “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” The key question is… 💡 How will you choose to look...
